The Life of Shinke

Archive for the ‘Life’ Category

Almost a week ago I wrote my FINAL, final exam.

And as I walked on campus I had the feeling that this might be the last time this ever happens.

I suppose it’s just sentimentality kicking in but it made me sad that my time there had come to an end. Things that I did day in day out would no longer be a part of my life. The people, the places, the routine, but it is indeed time to move on.

Even with this sadness in my heart about leaving I still found myself singing Jason Mraz‘s Wordplay half way through the exam thinking after this is over I’m a free woman!

Too bad completing your degree doesn’t guarantee you a job anymore.

Are you a final year student?

Are you feeling a bit sentimental or are you more than happy to leave?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy job hunting!

It’s Tuesday!

Time to show my week’s photography haul.

This week apart from snapping the beautiful clouds I branched out to plants. Flowers are so pretty!!! :)

These as usual were all taken with my iPod‘s camera and edited with Camera+.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Happy photo snapping! :)

If you are at all acquainted with the English language, you may have noticed some common sayings and words in there that are really silly, once you come to think of it. For example, why is it called a boxing ring when it is actually a square? Why is the load of the ship referred to as cargo, but when a truck carries a load on land, that is referred to as shipping?

Read more… 327 more words

Just read this and thought...this is why I'm glad English is my first language. Lol! Enjoy! :)

Well today is actually Sunday but I was sick so I didn’t get around to writing this post.

This week I’ve been listening to quite a bit of Jay-Z, more specifically The Blueprint 3 album.

My top five Jay-Z songs this week, which are almost all collabs are:

1. D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) – Jay-Z

2. Run This Town – Jay-Z feat Kanye West & Rihanna

3. Empire State of Mind – Jay-Z feat Alicia Keys

4. Off That – Jay-Z feat Drake

5. Izzo/In The End – Jay-Z/Linkin Park (Collision Course)

It’s Tuesday!

Time to show my week’s photography haul.

It would seem I really like taking pictures of the clouds, but they’re so pretty.

These as usual were all taken with my iPod’s camera and edited with Camera+.

This morning while lazing about on Goodreads I realized that I had a few ranking awards under my name. Curious I clicked on them and realized I had placed in last week’s round-up for most reviews, top user and best reviewer in my country but most shocking of all I had placed #1 in most books read last week in Jamaica. oO

Now I’m not stupid enough to flatter myself, these awards are only mine because many Jamaicans don’t use the service, nevertheless I think it’s pretty cool.

This got me thinking though, over the course of one week due to the fact that there was no Internet at work I got through seven books. Five of them were graphic novels but if Goodreads thinks they count then they count. Seven books, one week slightly unplugged from the world. Imagine what I would be able to accomplish if I was fully disconnected from the Internet.

Since the Internet is obviously the kryptonite to my reading I’ve decided to unplug regularly and enjoy reading.

What would you get done if you took a break from your online life?

How many books did you read last week?

Let me know in the comments below!

Happy reading! :)

It is yet another Friday and it time to tell you what is helping me to move my feet and keep a smile on my face.

Last week I raved about Sara Bareilles but this week Disney has stolen my heart.

My happy playlist consists of two songs, Prince Ali from Aladdin and I’ll Make A Man Out Of You from Mulan.

I’ve got them stuck in my head and they make me smile.

What has you moving your feet this week?

Do you love Disney songs?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy listening! :)

It’s Tuesday!

Time to show my week’s photography haul.

However, I don’t think they were that great and as such have decided to rework some of my pictures taken last year to enhance them.

They were all taken with my iPod‘s camera and edited with Camera+.

Title: A Christmas Carol

Author: Charles Dickens

Published: 1843

Description: Cruel miser Ebeneezer Scrooge has never met a shilling he doesn’t like. . .and hardly a man he does. And he hates Christmas most of all. When Scrooge is visited by his old partner, Jacob Marley, and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, he learns eternal lessons of charity, kindness, and goodwill. Experience a true Victorian Christmas! (Taken from Goodreads)

I read A Christmas Carol many months ago and decided not to do a post on it because what was there to say? Everyone already knows the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge even if they’ve never read the book but due to the Christmas I’ve had and the newness of the New Year wearing thin I thought I’d talk about the lessons this book teaches.

Scrooge was a miser, a mean old miser, he was the man years and experience had taught him to be. He pinched pennies and cared not who got hurt in the process. He cared about a nickel more than he did one human soul but on Christmas Eve he got the wake up of a lifetime, the sort of wake up everyone gets at Christmas time.

People are kinder around Christmas, more courteous, more generous, more forgiving, because Christmas is the holiday that reminds them that there is more to the world than money, fortune and fame, there’s family, friends, charity, love, hope. And that is what I want you to take away from the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge. That life is more than cheques and credit cards, more than pretty houses and fast cars, and we shouldn’t let circumstances harden our hearts to the world. We should be generous and kind to everyone all year round not just the holidays.

A Christmas Carol is not one of my favourite books of all time but it is a good story and well worth a read, it has a lot of moral points to pass on and really got me thinking when I read it. I give it a 4 out of 5.

What did you learn from A Christmas Carol?

Read any books lately that got you thinking and has pushed you on a better path?

Happy Reading! :)
