Now I’m not stupid enough to flatter myself, these awards are only mine because many Jamaicans don’t use the service, nevertheless I think it’s pretty cool.

This got me thinking though, over the course of one week due to the fact that there was no Internet at work I got through seven books. Five of them were graphic novels but if Goodreads thinks they count then they count. Seven books, one week slightly unplugged from the world. Imagine what I would be able to accomplish if I was fully disconnected from the Internet.

Since the Internet is obviously the kryptonite to my reading I’ve decided to unplug regularly and enjoy reading.

Last week I raved about Sara Bareilles but this week Disney has stolen my heart.

My happy playlist consists of two songs, Prince Ali from Aladdin and I’ll Make A Man Out Of You from Mulan.

I’ve got them stuck in my head and they make me smile.

I decided to read Little Women because it was always touted as one of the many books you simply must read before you die. I was told it was so inspirational and life changing and so of course I put it on my Fill In The Gaps List and got to it as soon as I could.

Sad to say this book was for the most part very disappointing. It did not change my life and was not very inspirational. The book started out really slow, and for  a few chapters I wondered what the point of the story was as we followed these four girls and their mother through their daily routine. It was so drab we went scene by scene through their play which to me was highly unnecessary. I almost gave up reading this book, that is until we meet Laurie and I got it into my head that Laurie and Jo would make a fabulous couple.

This singular hope, sad to say is what got me through this book, when that hope was dashed I lived on the hope that she would come to her senses later on and say yes, so you can just imagine my dismay when he got together with my least favourite character, Amy. And then to read about Jo falling in love with the old Professor Bhaer.

Beth seemed supernaturally sweet and kind to me, because I doubt there is a soul that selfless out there in the world. And her death, though sad seemed very drawn out and focused on the fact that her life was not a complete and utter waste.

Meg was vain and always wanted to live the high life and as she groomed Amy so was she and as such they both annoyed me. Meg provided some laughter when she got married to the nice and very patient Mr.Brooke but other than that reading about her and Amy was a chore.

Jo the boyish, clumsy one that could not seem to follow any of their odd rules stole my heart and made me smile. She had spirit, she had soul and she could write, all very good qualities. She broke my heart when she didn’t accept Laurie but deep down I knew she wouldn’t, she was always running away from love.

A lot of the chapters in this book seemed like short stories with a moral lesson, because of this fact the overall story didn’t seem very cohesive and was rather boring.

I give it a 3 out of 5 which surprises even me because I did not enjoy this book very much. Most of the main characters annoyed me and I didn’t get the romantic conclusion I was hoping for.

I read A Christmas Carol many months ago and decided not to do a post on it because what was there to say? Everyone already knows the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge even if they’ve never read the book but due to the Christmas I’ve had and the newness of the New Year wearing thin I thought I’d talk about the lessons this book teaches.

Scrooge was a miser, a mean old miser, he was the man years and experience had taught him to be. He pinched pennies and cared not who got hurt in the process. He cared about a nickel more than he did one human soul but on Christmas Eve he got the wake up of a lifetime, the sort of wake up everyone gets at Christmas time.

People are kinder around Christmas, more courteous, more generous, more forgiving, because Christmas is the holiday that reminds them that there is more to the world than money, fortune and fame, there’s family, friends, charity, love, hope. And that is what I want you to take away from the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge. That life is more than cheques and credit cards, more than pretty houses and fast cars, and we shouldn’t let circumstances harden our hearts to the world. We should be generous and kind to everyone all year round not just the holidays.

A Christmas Carol is not one of my favourite books of all time but it is a good story and well worth a read, it has a lot of moral points to pass on and really got me thinking when I read it. I give it a 4 out of 5.

It is the first Friday of the New Year and to start it off I thought I’d give you my happy playlist of the week.
