Book Club Kickoff: September 2014

Posted on: September 4, 2014

A couple posts ago I introduced you to the book clubs that I am a part of and I thought in the hopes of being more accountable and in the spirit of sharing, I would start a new series on the blog.

This series would consists of a kick off post where I will share the books that were picked for the month and the ones I will be reading and a wrap up post where I would talk about the ones I’ve read.

So without further ado here are the books that were chosen this month.

Little Book Club

1. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian is the first book in the Lux series and is a romance story about aliens.

I’ve been meaning to read this series for a while so I’ll definitely be getting to this one as soon as possible. Aliens, bad boys, life threatening situations and romance, what’s there not to love?

Due Date: September 30, 2014

Catching up on Classics (and lots more!)

1. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina is the story of a sophisticated Russian lady that pretty much abandons her husband to be with her lover and the fall out and chaos that follows that infidelity.

This is the quarterly read for the group and as such I should have started it from in July but as usual I am behind and I haven’t even cracked the cover. However, I think it’ll be an interesting read and I will indeed get to it this month.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

2. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Wuthering Heights is a romance story about the passionate love between Heathcliff and Catherine. It’s about revenge, betrayal and heartache with a little déjà vu thrown in for good measure.

I read this book while reading the Twilight series because Bella and Edward were always reading and quoting it and I wanted to understand the relevance of the quotes. That was some time ago and I don’t think I really appreciated the story but I doubt I’ll be rereading it any time soon because my TBR list is ridiculous.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

3. The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

The Phantom of the Opera is a story about a ghost that lives in an opera house that teaches an orphan girl to sing and eventually falls in love with her.

I’ve had this on my TBR for quite some time now, in fact it’s on my Fill in the Gaps list. I’ve wanted to read it since watching the Disney movie adaptation Phantom of the Megaplex. It seems very interesting and I hope to get to it pretty soon.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

4. The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde is a well known story about a scientist who awakens the evil within himself to become Mr.Hyde.

This was also on my Fill in the Gaps list as I’ve wanted to read it for a while now. However I read it last month so I can join in the discussion without revisiting the book.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

The Sword and Laser

1. Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

Stories of Your Life and Others contains eight astonishing science-fiction stories that explore the boundaries between science and religion, between determinism and our ability to choose, between words and the entities they describe.

I had never heard of this book before its selection but it seems interesting enough and should be a fun read.

Due Date: October 1, 2014

Vaginal Fantasy Book Club

1. Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Magic Bites is an urban fantasy about a world where magic and technology are mutually exclusive. The main character’s job is basically to clear up the mess that a magic occurrence causes however things get interesting when her guardian is murdered.

This is the main pick for Vaginal Fantasy this month and is the first book in the Kate Daniels series. Again, I had never heard of this book before but it seems interesting and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

2. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

A Discovery of Witches is a story about a witch that finds a long sought after manuscript and the chaos that follows that discovery.

This is the alt pick for Vaginal Fantasy this month and is the first book in the All Souls trilogy. I had no idea what this book was about when it was selected as again I had never heard of it but as soon as I saw “centuries-old vampire and a spellbound witch” I immediately wanted to read it. I’m not sure if I’ll get to it this month as it’s not a mandatory read but I will get to it very, very soon.

Due Date: September 30, 2014

Booksplosion Read-Along

1. Rumble by Ellen Hopkins

Rumble is about an atheist who doesn’t have any faith in God because so many terrible things have happened to him and his family. However, at some point in the novel he hears a rumble which causes him to question his beliefs.

I had never heard of this book before it’s selection and I don’t normally read books about religion but it’s seems interesting and I’m willing to give it a try.

Due Date: October 4, 2014

So in total that is a whopping nine books that I need to read this month however it’s not necessary to read the alt pick and I’ve already read two of these books so we’re down to six. Granted a few of them are tomes and I’m planning to read four books from my Fill in the Gaps list this month, it is a hefty list. Nonetheless I am optimistic that I can get through most if not all of the books on my list this month.

Have you read any of these books?

What did you think of them?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy reading!

PS. I’m sorry this post is late, I’ve gotten into the habit of scheduling my posts however as Vaginal Fantasy released their picks on the 2nd and my computer was acting up yesterday I wasn’t able to write this post before today. I apologize!
