The Life of Shinke

Hey everyone, it’s Saturday and time for another “Favorites” blog post!

Today I thought we’d give YouTube a break and talk about podcasts. Back in 2011 I wrote the post “My Ten Favourite Podcasts” but since then some of these podcasts have ended and some have been replaced.

So without adieu here are my new favorite podcasts in no particular order.

News

1. Global News

Global News is a daily BBC podcast that gives you the best stories, interviews and on the spot reporting from around the world.

It is updated twice a day, every day and provides me with all the information I need to be up to date on current events.

2. Daily Tech News Show (DTNS)

The Daily Tech News Show is a daily podcast that delivers the essential headlines in tech news that day combined with analysis from top names in technology.

It is updated on weekdays and is quite informative. Tom Merritt does a great job hosting the show and brings a lot of interesting people on to help him dissect the day’s news. This podcast is great for keeping up on what’s going on in the tech world each day.

3. This Week in Tech (TWIT)

This Week in Tech is a weekly podcast hosted by Leo Laporte and his friends. Each week he has a different set of tech experts in the studio with him where they discuss the top tech stories of the week.

This one made it onto my list the last time and remains there because it keeps me up to date on the week’s tech news. It really goes in-depth with the aid of experts to explain the significance of each headline and the impact it will likely have on the world and the tech community.

4. We Have Concerns

We Have Concerns is a weekly podcast hosted by Jeff Cannata and Anthony Carboni. Each week they take interesting articles and discuss all the wonder and dread hidden inside these seemingly innocuous things.

It is updated twice sometimes three times per week and is quite hilarious. The hosts are so funny and likable and they play off each other very well. While this isn’t a news podcast per say it does introduce me to news articles I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Comedy

5. Friday Night Comedy

Friday Night Comedy is a weekly podcast which features either The News Quiz or The Now Show.

The News Quiz is hosted by Sandi Toksvig and is a topical panel quiz show where the questions are taken from the week’s news stories.

The Now Show is hosted by Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis and is a satirical take on the week’s news stories. It consists of a mixture of skits, songs, stand up, monologue and sketches.

It doesn’t matter which one BBC chooses to send out, I enjoy both shows. They’re hilarious and even more so when you actually know the news story they’re making fun of. Even if you haven’t been keeping up with world news just listening to these shows would give you a very good idea of what you missed.

6. Comedy of the Week

Comedy of the Week is a weekly show that presents an episode of the latest comedy show making the rounds on BBC Radio 4.

The people at Radio 4 have a knack for picking great comedies and so you won’t have to worry about an off week, they’re all hilarious.

Books

7. Books on the Nightstand

Books on the Nightstand is a weekly podcast hosted by Michael Kindness and Ann Kingman where they give book recommendations and offer their listeners with an inside scoop into the world of publishing and books.

This podcast has everything a book lover would want, recommendations, book news and fun and interesting discussions.

8. Sword and Laser

The Sword and Laser is a science fiction and fantasy-themed book club, video show and podcast, started by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt. The main goal of the club is to build a strong online community of sci-fi / fantasy buffs, and to discuss and enjoy books of both genres.

It is updated weekly and is so fun to listen to. The book discussions, author interviews, book club picks and great community makes this a must listen podcast for book lovers.

Other

9. The Archers

The Archers is radio drama on BBC Radio 4 and has been around for over 60 years.

It can be enjoyed in podcast form either in daily fifteen minute bites or weekly as an omnibus. Personally I prefer the omnibus because I really get to enjoy all the drama of the past week without constant cliffhangers.

It’s an amazing radio drama and I recommend everyone give it a listen especially if you like soap operas.

10. This American Life

This American Life is a radio show on WBEZ Chicago that can be downloaded as a podcast. The show is hosted by Ira Glass and he picks a theme each week and then brings the listeners varying stories surrounding that singular theme.

I love listening to this show because I always feel inspired and more knowledgeable after listening. This show introduces me to things I would never have gone looking for hence broadening my general knowledge of the world and helping me to form opinions and thoughts on each topic.

After every show I’m always like, you’ve GOT to listen to this. It’s that good.

Do you listen to podcasts?

What are some of your favorites?

Did any of these make your list?

Happy listening! 🙂

Happy Friday everyone!

It is time for my weekly series, “Best of the Week”. In this post I will share with you all the things I’ve been loving this week in the hopes of introducing you to something amazing.

So lets get started!

Videos

I was poking around YouTube as I often do when I found these two gems, Seth MacFarlane doing his Family Guy voices and Adam Levine singing Sesame Street in the voice of the late, great Michael Jackson among other things.

TV Shows/Movies

This week I’ve been watching Season 3 of Scandal and Season 1 of The Originals on Netflix to gear up for their premiere. However the big news in this category has got to be the fact that all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls is coming to Netflix. *cue the happy music*

This is one of my favorite series of all time and starting October 1st I will be able to binge watch to my heart’s content. Stars Hollow here I come!

Music

I haven’t been listening to much music this week however the theme song for Outlander has been stuck in my head all week. It is such a beautiful song and very fitting for the series.

Unfortunately I haven’t been in much of a reading mood this week so there are no books to share.

What are you obsessing about this week?

Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Friday! 🙂

Hey guys, it’s Friday!!!

Today I will be kicking off yet another new series for the blog, the “Best of the Week” series. Every Friday I will be sharing what I’ve been loving during the week. It’ll mostly consist of media; clips, songs, shows, etc however it won’t be limited to this at all.

So without further ado lets jump into the first list!

Videos

As per usual, YouTube takes up a lot of my time. I just get so lost in my subscription box and the recommended videos, it’s ridiculous. However my favorite video this week has been Superwoman‘s parent’s reaction to Nicki Minaj‘s music video for Anaconda. It is hilarious and a must see!

TV Shows/Movies

I haven’t been watching a lot of movies or TV shows this week however I am obsessed with the new series Outlander on Starz. It is so amazing and Jamie is so swoon worthy and his accent, his accent would bring girls to their knees. Below I have provided a fan video with a mash up of a lot of Claire and Jamie’s moments together.

Music

I’ve found myself reverting to my teen self and so this week I was obsessed with N’sync’s last album, Celebrity. I’ve been listening to it over and over and just enjoying the fun upbeat songs, the break up songs and of course the beautiful ballads on the album. It makes me sad that they broke up.

Also I’ve been loving Michael Jackson’s songs Speechless and Heaven Can Wait. Those songs hit me right in the heart! Beautiful songs by a legendary singer.

Finally I’ve also been jamming out to songs from movies such as I Will Follow Him from Sister Act and Prince Ali from Aladdin.

Books

For some reason all I’ve wanted to read this week is manga, lots and lots of manga. And not just any manga but romance based, school life, drama ridden manga, which as far as I’m concerned are the best ones.

The two I powered through this week are:

1. Asa Made Motto by Shin Yumachi

Synopsis: Mitsuru is gentle and kind, and he’s deeply in love with Aoi. Ryo, Mitsuru’s twin brother, is stoic and brutish and loves to tease and torment Aoi. The choice should be clear, so why does Aoi find herself so much more attracted to Ryo…?! (Taken from Manga Reader)

2. Gakuen Ouji by Jun Yuzuki

Synopsis: The stage is set in the prestigious Private Jyoushioka High School — or more commonly known as Joshi High. It became co-educational a few years ago, but females still heavily outnumber the males. The number of males could be easily counted. While one would think males would be pampered in such a harem school, the reality is far from being heavenly. It was the world of female domination. (Taken from Manga Reader)

What are you obsessing about this week?

Happy Friday! 🙂

Today I want to debut a new series on the blog called “Favorites”.

What I aim to do with this series is to showcase things that I might not otherwise talk about but I really love and enjoy.

This week’s list is about my favorite YouTube personalities. When I see new videos from these channels in my subscription box I’m super excited and I will drop everything to go and watch them.

So in no particular order here are three of my favorite YouTube stars.

1. iiSuperwomanii

Lilly Singh aka Superwoman is a Canadian ball of sunshine. She is so cheerful, fun, optimistic, honest and down to earth. Her videos are hilarious as well as inspirational. She attempts to make you smile as well as reach for your dreams. Her down to earth mentality and funny quirks makes her videos very relatable and easy to enjoy.

2. sWooZie

Adande aka Swoozie is from Florida and probably one of the best storytellers of all time. His stories are hilarious and riddled with nerd and geek references. He normally portrays his stories through animation however he doesn’t miss a beat when he tells them in his normal human form. He is also very down to earth and fun to watch.

3. VlogBrothers

The Vlog Brothers are made up of Hank and John Green, two brothers who vlog for each and the world to keep in contact. And just in case you’re wondering, yes he’s that John Green, the author of The Fault in Our Stars among other books. Hank while not as well known to the non-YouTube public is a talented musician. I first saw them in a pre-roll ad and had to check them out. Their videos are informative as well as hilarious.

Honorable Mentions:

1. Humble the Poet

I discovered the awesomeness that is Humble the Poet after he did a song with Superwoman called #LEH. His videos are more inspirational and thought provoking than funny but they are quite good and I look forward to hearing his thoughts on different topics.

2. Mary Kate Wiles

Mary Kate Wiles is an actress, known around the YouTube sphere for many roles but most notable Lydia Bennett in the Lizzie Bennett Diaries. This is her personal channel and while not updated often is quite interesting. She has a mix of videos from behind the scenes to vlogs to unboxings but in each one her great personality shines through making them more interesting than they would initially seem.

3. Nerdy and Quirky

Sabrina is as her username explains nerdy and quirky. She makes fun and interesting videos with the humor you would expect from a quirky YouTuber.

Do you watch any of these YouTubers?

Who are your favorites?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy viewing! 🙂

Sherlock

Posted on: July 26, 2012

After reading A Study in Scarlet I was on a Sherlock high and decided to finally watch the BBC series, Sherlock.

All I can I say is, if I loved Sherlock 100% before this show I love him 5 billions times after it. It was AMAZING!

Benedict Cumberbatch is Sherlock personified, he is so good, so amazing in this role. I was in, I was ALL in. Take me anywhere you want, text me anytime I would be there on my toe point. Love him!

This show made me envy John Watson even more than before, I want Sherlock as my best friend, I wanna run around with him solving cases and hearing how he comes up with his deductions. The fun I would have.

I envied Molly even more than John because she got to work with him and she knew him before all the hype. Plus, I would crush on him SO BAD! SOOOO BAD! It’s not even funny. After watching one episode I was hooked. Forget Robert Downey Jnr, forget everybody else, Benedict Cumberbatch is MY Sherlock. End of story.

The show itself was amazing, I loved the twists they took on the original, I love the characters, I love the way they interact, the witty conversations, the fact that John has a blog, the bromance…oh how I love the bromance, the way they tie in the lore, it’s just amazing! I especailly LOVE the way they show his deductions, there cannot be a better way I guarantee you and of course I love the fact that his texts come up on-screen. 🙂

The fact that there are only 3 episodes per season upsets me because there needs to SO much more but the fact that each episode is approximately 90 minutes helps.

The last episode! I won’t spoil it, I won’t spoil it I promise but I just gotta say the emotions that I felt in that episode, *sigh* my poor heart. And finally, I believe in Sherlock Holmes.

Watch it, love it, it is a MUST see, A – MUST – SEE!

And let me know what you think in the comments below.

I bet you’ll be as pissed as I was to find out the next season isn’t due until January 2013 but you’ll be so excited! 🙂

Watch it, do it and happy viewing! 🙂

A couple of months ago I did a post on my ten favourite podcasts and topping that list was the hilarious weekly podcast Diggnation.

Unfortunately that podcast is coming to an end.

Kevin and Alex announced it in the podcast last week.

They state growing up, moving on to other projects and not having enough time to film the series as the reason for the popular show coming to an end.

But don’t cry yet! Just like Oprah they’re giving you time to grieve, get over it and help them go out with a bang!

They’ll have some meet-ups, some live shows and some surprises.

And even though I can’t believe the show is ending and I’m all torn up about losing one of my favourite shows, I can’t wait to see what they come up with to say goodbye.

Six and a half years, over 300 episodes of fun and laugher…it’s hard to let go but all good things must come to an end.

So we’ll say goodbye to Diggnation in December.

Are you a fan? Are you sad to see it go?

Are any of your favourite podcasts coming to an end?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy Listening! 🙂

I love podcasts!

They get me through the boring mundane moments in the day such as the two-hour commute to school or the breaks between classes.

Podcasts keep me entertained and today I’d like to share ten of my favourites.

1. The Totally Rad Show

The Totally Rad Show daily video podcast hosted by Alex Albrecht, Jeff Cannata and Dan Trachtenberg that reviews movies, video games, comics, and TV shows with a bit of games and tom-foolery thrown in for good measure.

Although their reviews are very interesting and well worth listening to the thing I like most about this show is their interaction with each other, the inside jokes, the gags. I just really like watching these guys be really animated about something they love.

Check them out at Revision3.

2. Diggnation

Diggnation is a weekly video podcast hosted by Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose and they talk about some of the hottest submitted stories found on Digg that week.

I love this show because it cracks me up. Plain and simple. This show is hilarious! Alex, Kevin, Prager, and Hippie Glen are always drinking and hence make crazy bets and doing stupid things. Just imagine having your friends over and then when everyone is tipsy discussing the hot topics at the moment. Exactly! That is Diggnation! I never have a dull moment watching this show. NEVER!

Check them out at Revision3.

3. The Nerdist Podcast

The Nerdist Podcast is a weekly audio interview show hosted by Chris Hardwick, Matt Mira and Jonah Ray. The show has two formats, it’s either Chris and the guys by themselves catching up and regailing us with hilarious stories OR Chris and the guys interviewing some celebrity such as Drew Carey, Jimmy Fallon and Eliza Dushku.

Either format is great. The interactions are fun and I just enjoy listening to it. I recently discovered all the great guests they had in their backlog and have decided to revisit those episodes. Hope you will too.

Check them out at Nerdist.

This show introduces me to things I would never have gone looking for hence broaden my general knowledge of the world and helping me to form opinions and thoughts on each topic.

After every show I’m always like, you’ve GOT to listen to this. It’s that good. So check it out at This American Life.

5. Friday Night Comedy

Friday Night Comedy is a weekly audio podcast where it features either The News Quiz or The Now Show.

Doesn’t matter which one BBC chooses to send out. I enjoy both of these shows. They’re hilarious and even more so when you actually know the news story they’re making fun of. Even if you haven’t been keeping up with world news just listening to these shows would give you a very good idea of what you missed.

Check it out at BBC Radio 4, you won’t regret it!

6. Comedy of the Week

Comedy of the Week is a weekly audio show that presents an episode of the latest comedy show making the rounds on BBC Radio 4. This show has no host as every week you get something new.

Thankfully they’ve all been funny episodes so I don’t have to worry about bad weeks. Unfortunately I want to go and listen to all these new shows they’re introducing me too. Lol!

Go check them out at BBC Radio 4, you’ll laugh your pants off!

7. Books on the Nightstand

Books on the Nightstand is a weekly audio podcast hosted by Michael Kindness and Ann Kingman where they give out book recommendations and give their listeners an inside scoop into the world of publishing and books.

I love this show. Books are my thing, reading is my hobby so to have a show where everything discussed is book related is AWESOME! Every time I listen to this show I have to open up my Shelfari or Goodreads to log their recommendations in my TBR pile.

If you love reading this is the podcast for you. Check them out at Books on the Nightstand.

8. Guys Can Read

Guys Can Read is a weekly audio podcast hosted by Luke Navarro and Kevin McGill where they take turns reviewing a book each week. They focus a lot on the story that the book is trying to convey and really make you think about what you’re reading.

I think they’re very insightful and listening to them definitely opened my eyes to new concepts. Made me not just think “OMG I love this book!” but really dig deep to see what exactly I loved about it, the story, the characterization, the fan service it paid to me?

They’ve started two new side projects that fall under the Guys Can Read Umbrella which are The Aftershow and Off the Page. The Aftershow continues the conversation about the book they reviewed but they suggest you listen to this AFTER reading the book as it is riddled with spoilers. Off the Page is a way for them to review movies, TV shows, comics, etc which they couldn’t touch on the regular episode of Guys Can Read.

I enjoy the side shows just as much as the main one and think you will too. Check them out at Guys Can Read.

9. Pop My Culture

Pop My Culture is a bi-weekly audio podcast hosted by Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland where these two comedic talents interview celebrities such as Mindy Sterling, Chris Hardwick and Danny Pudi.

Their interview is far from the normal. They ask them about anything and everything, including a lot of things not related to their career…like how’d the like the season finale of Dancing with the Stars. This show is hilarious and well worth the two-week wait.

Check them out at Pop My Culture Podcast.

10. This Week in Tech (TWiT)

This Week in Tech is a weekly video podcast hosted by Leo Laporte and his friends. Each week he has a different set of tech experts in the studio (affectionately called the cottage) with him where they discuss the top tech stories of the week.

Being the geek I am I love this show because it keeps me up to date on all the big changes going on in the tech world and offers me expert opinion so that my eyes aren’t covered by the pretty words of the big companies. If you’re into technology you should definitely give this show or any of the many others that Leo and his friends do a try. There is a show for everyone trust me.

Check it out at The TWiT Netcast Network.

These are just my ten, there are tons of great podcasts out there just waiting for you to discover them.

What are your favourites and do you listen to any of these?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy listening! 🙂
